If your vacation got you thinking " I want to own a piece of this paradise", then won't be the only one. Owning real estate in Costa Rica is not only a good and safe investment but also a great option for an affordable retirement retreat. We have owned, sold and managed many different pieces of properties/houses in Costa Rica, and would love to share our experiences and know-how. One of the most important things that you should keep in mind is that you will need a trustworthy and reliable lawyer to actually consult you and execute the sales contract. As lawyers in costa rica can also act as notaries, you will really have to be carefull in selecting the right one. Also keep in mind that big law firms do not guarantee for good service. Its always a good idea to also get some titel insurance when you buy the real estate. We have always worked with STewart Titel out of SJ and it has worked out good for us. But there are a few more players offering the same service. When you actually have fallen in love with one piece of real estate, make sure that it has a clear titel but also let the seller show you exact borders. To be sure, we recommend paying the extra bucks to get an independant topographer to confirm the borders. Border debates are one of the biggest problem here in costa rica as the topography is not so exact yet (next to the big palm tree, 2 meters towards the river, etc.). Also - make sure the property has street (creating streets that you can drive on, can be an expensive effort - especially with the terrain and amount of rain each year), water and electricity access!!!
