This is just a beautiful picture from my friend photographer Ilse Lahofer flying over the south pacific coast of costa rica....

The other day, I went to the city aquarium in
Vienna (Haus des Meeres), and found that my 4,5 year old son was most fascinated not by the sharks or sting rays but by the displayed leaf cutter ants (don’t ask me why these are in the aquarium and not terrarium). I explained to him that these are the same animals that we have in millions if not billions in our properties in Costa Rica.
Leaf cutter ants are truly fascinating. And although, most people in Costa Rica (usually foreigners) will kill them with many different ways of poisoning, we have let them live in our properties, simple because their fascinating being and behavior is one part why we fell in love with Costa Rica. They do cut the leaves of our few hundred hibiscus plants, which we planted around the borders of the land continuously, but they are just
as cool as a beautiful hibiscus fence might have been. To read more about them, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf_cutter_ants.

I first came to Costa Rica in 1998. I fell in love with the country right away for so many reasons. I have been coming, living and unfortunately never staying off and on since.
